Pope Benedict XVI waves during a canonization mass in St. Peter's square, Vatican, 17 October 2010. The pope formally recognized Australia's first saint, Sister Mary MacKillop, who is revered as a pioneer of education in Outback Australia and the founder of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart. She was canonised along with Stanislaw Soltys of Poland, Andre Bessette of Canada, Candida Maria de Jesus Cipitria y Barriola of Spain, and Italians Giulia Salzano and Battista da Varano.
